STANDARD CONTAINER QUESTIONS (FAQ'S).

What are the standard dimensions of a shipping container?

Standard shipping containers are typically available in 20' and 40' lengths, with a height of 8'6" and width of 8'. These dimensions comply with international ISO standards, making them ideal for storage, transport, or modification projects.

Are standard containers structurally compatible with modifications?

Yes, standard shipping containers are extremely well-suited for modification due to their strong corrugated steel frame and standardised dimensions. Common modifications include adding windows, personnel doors, roller shutters, partition walls, electrical wiring, insulation, plumbing, and ventilation systems. They can also be combined side by side or stacked to create larger structures. Their uniform construction makes it straightforward for experienced container fabricators to customise them to almost any specification.

How are standard containers designed to support stacking?

Standard shipping containers are engineered with corner castings β€” reinforced steel fittings located at each of the eight corners of the container. These corner castings are specifically designed to bear the load of stacked containers above, allowing standard units to be safely stacked up to nine containers high when fully loaded. This makes them highly efficient for port storage and multi-level conversion projects. When stacking for permanent structures, additional engineering and safety assessments are recommended.

Do standard containers require a foundation?

For temporary storage use, standard containers do not typically require a formal foundation β€” they can be placed directly on firm, level ground such as compacted gravel, concrete, or hardstand. However, for permanent installations or conversion projects, a proper foundation such as concrete footings or piers is strongly recommended to ensure stability, prevent moisture ingress from the ground, and comply with local building regulations. Always check council or local authority requirements before permanently siting a container on your property.
