INSULATED CONTAINER QUESTIONS (FAQ'S).

What sizes are available for insulated or reefer containers?

Insulated and refrigerated containers are most commonly available in 20' and 40' lengths, with high cube (9'6" height) options being the most prevalent. These containers include thick internal insulation and durable interior walls, originally built for temperature-sensitive cargo.

Can the original refrigeration system be reactivated?

In many cases, yes β€” provided the refrigeration unit is still mechanically sound and has not been removed or severely damaged. Reactivation typically involves a full service of the compressor, checking refrigerant levels, inspecting seals and electrical connections, and testing the thermostat controls. It is advisable to have a qualified refrigeration technician assess the unit before attempting to repower it. Costs and feasibility will vary depending on the age and condition of the machinery.

What are the advantages of choosing an insulated container?

Insulated containers offer several key benefits over standard dry containers. Their thick foam-insulated walls provide excellent temperature stability, making them ideal for storing food, beverages, pharmaceuticals, or any heat-sensitive materials. They also tend to have smoother, more hygienic interior walls, making them easier to clean. Additionally, their robust construction makes them well-suited for conversion into cool rooms, mobile kitchens, or climate-controlled storage spaces.

Can insulated containers be modified like standard containers?

Yes, insulated containers can be modified, though the process differs slightly from standard steel containers. Because the walls contain insulation panels rather than solid corrugated steel, cutting or altering the structure requires more care to maintain the thermal integrity of the unit. Common modifications include adding shelving, lighting, ventilation, or additional access doors. It is recommended to work with an experienced container modifier who is familiar with reefer construction.

How thick are the walls of a typical reefer container?

In many cases, yes β€” provided the refrigeration unit is still mechanically sound and has not been removed or severely damaged. Reactivation typically involves a full service of the compressor, checking refrigerant levels, inspecting seals and electrical connections, and testing the thermostat controls. It is advisable to have a qualified refrigeration technician assess the unit before attempting to repower it. Costs and feasibility will vary depending on the age and condition of the machinery.
